On completion of your process cycle, purge out the process chamber with nitrogen and follow the completed purge with a backfill of an oxygen bearing gas. Plateg can assist you with this technology. The color will depend on both time at temperature and the temperature selected. What you are doing is oxidizing the steel surfacve. The oxide thickness will depend on the time and the temperature.
